And some good stories to boot - like that time in the mid-80s when he played on tour with Eddie Money. "I was in the music video for "Shakin'," he tells me. I search for the video on YouTube to check it out, and sure enough, here he is, rockin' out on the keyboard. It was his moment of fame. The tour only lasted nine months, but it made him enough money to put his daughter through college. "My mom used to make me play piano," he laughs. "You know, Bach and Beethoven and all that." At the age of 12, Francois fell in love with rock-n-roll, coming to revere such artists as Elton John and Billy Joel. (His mom wasn't too keen on it at first, but she eventually came around.) "But I'll always still play Bach," he says. Determined not to live the life of a starving artist forever, Francois went to culinary arts school to become a chef. And it paid off: He worked as Executive Chef at a Seattle restaurant for some time and was doing pretty well - that is, until his paychecks started bouncing. Out of stable work and in between jobs, Francois started selling Real Change to pay the bills. He still plays piano gigs on the side - often performing at dueling piano hotspots like Chopstix and 88 Keys - and is a proud member of the Musicians' Association of Seattle.
